“Children in foster care often struggle with issues of trust, attachment, and anxiety,” says Dr. John DeGarmo, Ed.D, founder of The Foster Care Institute.

Children in foster care also face significant emotional difficulties such as a lack of self-worth and the need to be in control, which can make it hard to establish healthy, loving relationships.

Through our non-profit network of salons and stylists, Love and Haircuts serves foster youth by giving transformative time in the salon to honor their worth, dignity and future. Love & Haircuts is dedicated to sharing our expertise, care and kindness through the transformative process of personal care.

In this way, these kids are nurtured, respected, and given the opportunity to see their potential both inside and outside. We believe this is a powerful expression of self care that leads to love… and that the results are exponential and powerful.

CARE... IT’S DEEP IN OUR ROOTS

“Growing up, I always felt out of place. I was bullied for a speech impediment and it was hard to shake those insecurities. I know many children struggle to fit in just like I did when I was young. I felt helpless and small and wished someone would have taken time to make me feel special.

I want to help as many kids as I can by giving them a little confidence boost through a haircut as well as making them feel special by getting to know them. I want to help influence every child that sits in my chair to follow their dreams. To never let anyone make them feel less than amazing.

Ultimately, my dream is to empower our youth and help them build confidence and continue to teach them to enjoy all that life throws their way. My sons father was at Orangewood Children and Family Center for a time. It was hard on him and his siblings. Unfortunately some children go through the pain and fear of being away from their parents, but I hope to help relieve a small amount of that pain even if it is for a short period of time during a haircut.

The youth is our future, so now is the time to engrave in them that love is the only answer. Love is what makes the world go round. Love is what keeps us all together and love is what will set us all free.”

ABOUT LOVE & HAIRCUTS

Established during the pandemic in 2021, Love & Haircuts began as a way to offer children in foster homes a personalized haircut — as well as a fun salon experience. We have provided dozens and dozens of cuts with the aim of growing this into a national network.

We quickly came to understand how meaningful this program was for everyone involved. Not only did we get to see the absolute joy and gratitude from the foster youth, but each and every participating stylist was incredibly moved and uplifted by the experience.

In this way, every trim, cut and fade helps support our mission:

to spread love and support the worth, dignity and potential of foster youth by giving personalized, transformative time in the salon with a caring stylist
